We finally got the rear patio cover finished. It only took a year to finish up, as we basically demo'd it last year right before starting the house re-roof project. A special thanks to Jeff (as usual) for helping me out with a lot of it. It will be nice to be able to use that area in the rain again, especially because the kids will be able to ride their bikes and play outside even when the weather is less than perfect. After it was finished I got to thinking, wouldn't it be cool if we could of done it with solar panels?! There is always next time :)
We also finished our garden project and have quite a few plants already poking up, some should be ready to eat in a few months probably. Yum, Yum! The actual bed frame was fairly easy. We made it out of the cherry landscape timbers, as we've done throughout the yard in various applications. It took 2 cu.yards, or 2 trucks full of soil to fill it up. I think the hardest part was digging and leveling it out before building it. That job consisted of about 50 wheelbarrows we dumped in the ravine across the road.
Still on the schedule for this summer is the shop addition, which has also been over a year in the making (the floor was finished last summer) and the sideway shingles for the gable ends of the house.
An uninsured driver hit Jaime and the girls head on while they were driving in the SantaFe about a month ago. It could of been much worse that it was, and we were all really lucky actually. Physically both of the girls were fine, just a little scared, and Jaime had a little bit of whiplash which she's been going to physical therapy and massage treatments for. They ended up totaling our vehicle (they stopped tallying up the damage when it hit $8000). Our insurance company, Progressive, was extremely helpful and very fair. We ended up settling the car part, check in hand, 2 weeks after the accident and the medical part, check in hand, 4 weeks after. Since the SantaFe was already paid off, we basically took the money from the insurance pay out and paid off our other car (the Sonata). And then after doing quite a bit of research and test driving about 8 vehicles, we ended up getting another SantaFe. It's a 2008 Limited Touring Package (our other one was a 2002). It's got 7 seats (the old one had 4) and a DVD entertainment system for the kids which they love. It's glorious. Although Jaime won't let me drive it much, she says she's the one that got hit so she should be able to drive the new car. Not sure how that works, but what are you going to do?
I got a new cell phone, which in my opinion is the cat's meow. It's the HTC Droid Incredible (from Verizon) and it ROCKS! It's my first venture into the smart phone arena and I'm not sure how I did anything before. I got a great deal on the phone and the data plan through work (they pay for all but $30 or so of it). It's got an awesome 8mp camera (most of the photos shown on this month blog is from the phone), and a super-fast processor. It's so much easier posting pictures and videos of the girls to the web or updating Facebook and such. It really is a work of art.
I was asked to be the officiant at a wedding for some friends from work which was a little scary but certainly fun. Thanks to the power of the internet, I've been an ordained minister since 2002, but have not had any reason to actually be one until now. Everything went well and the wedding turned out quite nice. It was at Deception Pass outside on the beach which was beautiful. It did rain pretty much the entire day before and the most of the morning, but ended up breaking about an hour before they did the ceremony and for about a 2-3 hour window where we got some pictures and such after. I was very honored to be asked and happy that it turned out.
McKenna starts drama school next Saturday at the Seattle Children's Theatre. We enrolled her in Saturday classes for about 2-1/2 months. I think she'll really get a kick out of it and I can't wait to see her interact with all of the other kids and teachers. While either Jaime or I stay with McKenna, the other one will spend some fun time with Lilah at the Science Center or the Children's Museum or something like that.
We've got a family camping trip planned for August which we are all looking forward to. We've reserved a family friendly KOA site so we'll have a lot of different things to keep us busy. It'll be Lilah's first time actually camping, although we've set up the tents in the backyard a few times so she could get used to it. I'll post about it after it happens.
Until next time, I hope this finds you well.
